Epicor Kinetic licences: concurrency, browser sessions and seat types

Applies to: Epicor Kinetic. Specific license terms and modules depend on your licensing contract. Validate session behaviors in Pilot.

Short answer

Epicor Kinetic uses concurrent licensing for most interactive seats: you can create any number of named users, but only as many can be signed in at once as your licence allows. Opening multiple tabs in the same browser profile generally shares the session; using a different browser or an Incognito window takes another seat.

Common licence types

  • Default / Enterprise: full concurrent access to your licensed modules.
  • Shop Floor / Data Collection (MES): a lower-cost concurrent seat for logging labor, clocking in/out, and shop-floor transactions.
  • Web Services / API: seats or access for integrations, avoiding consuming an interactive user seat.

Licence names, terms, and packaging differ by contract and release, so verify against your licence file (.lic) and agreement.

Browser sessions and multiple tabs

Kinetic runs in the browser. Opening multiple tabs in the same browser profile shares the session context and counts as one concurrent user. Opening an Incognito / InPrivate window or a different browser starts a separate session and consumes another seat. Closing tabs does not always release a seat immediately; signing out cleanly is the safest practice.

Integrations and service accounts

Automated integrations (eCommerce, CRM, EDI, BI) that call Kinetic via REST or web services should use dedicated integration accounts and appropriate API access scopes rather than human administrator accounts. This prevents background scripts from competing with daytime users for interactive seats.

Managing and clearing stuck sessions

When a user disconnects abruptly, their session can remain active until the idle timeout expires. Administrators can view active sessions and clear orphaned ones in Kinetic Administration tools (such as Session Monitor / Active Users).

  • On-premises environments can also inspect session tables (such as Ice.SysSession).
  • Cloud customers should use the administrative screens provided in Kinetic.
  • Set idle timeouts so abandoned sessions are cleaned up automatically.

FAQ

What happens when the limit is reached?

The next user who tries to sign in is told licences are full and cannot sign in until a seat frees up.

Do multi-company users consume multiple seats?

Switching companies within the same session does not take an extra seat.

Does DMT consume a licence?

Yes, DMT authenticates as a user and consumes a concurrent Default User license seat for the duration of the import.
